The Foreclosure Crisis: Challenges and Solutions to the Mortgage Meltdown

The 2012 “The Foreclosure Crisis: Challenges and Solutions to the Mortgage Meltdown” symposium discussed the U.S. home foreclosure crisis and responses to the mortgage meltdown in the late-2000s.

This symposium convened academics, policymakers, and business leaders to address what public and private sectors “should and could do” to resolve the foreclosure crisis. Topics discussed included the state of the housing market, the 50-state attorney general mortgage settlement, foreclosure prevention initiatives (HAMP, HARP, etc.), and modernization of mortgage recordation. Panel 1 examined government and private efforts to assist underwater mortgages (speakers from academia, Wells Fargo, and the Center for Responsible Lending), and Panel 2 discussed reforming the property recording system to prevent future crises (speakers included legal scholars and industry experts like Nancy Wallace and Benjamin Weber).
.
Notable speakers included Berkeley Law professors (e.g. Dwight Jaffee) and industry figures (e.g. David Moskowitz, Wells Fargo’s consumer lending counsel) participated, with moderators like Bill Falik (Mortgage Resolution Partners) guiding discussion.

The symposium’s insights were later reflected in BBLJ’s Volume 9, Issue 1, which featured articles on mortgage finance and regulatory proposals influenced by the discussions (e.g. proposals for recording system modernization).
